Harvard professor on TCS board

IT giant Tata Consultancy Services said on Thursday that it has appointed Harvard Professor Clayton M Christensen as an independent director on its board.

Clayton M. Christensen is the Robert and Jane Cizik Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, with a joint appointment in the Technology & Operations Management and General Management faculty groups.

His research and teaching interests centre on the management of technological innovation, developing organizational capabilities, finding new markets for new technologies.

Christensen has also gained a great reputation for his work on "disruptive innovations".

Following this appointment, the board of directors of TCS now has six members of which four - Aman Mehta, Naresh Chandra, V Thyagarajan and Christensen - are independent directors. The other directors are Chairman Ratan Tata, CEO and Managing Director, S Ramadorai.

Commenting on the latest addition to the board of directors, Ramadorai said, "As TCS continues to grow its business globally, innovation and creativity are going to be critical requirements to sustain and drive this organisation. His appointment on the TCS Board reinforces the evolving global character of TCS and he will be a great asset for the company."

Christensen is the author of the best selling books The Innovators Dilemma (1997), which received the Global Busines s Book Award for the best business book published in 1997, and The Innovator's Solution (2003).

Christensen holds a BA with highest honors in economics from Brigham Young University (1975), and an M.Phil in applied econometrics and the economics of less-developed countries from Oxford University (1977), where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He received an MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Business School in 1979, graduating as a George F. Baker Scholar. He was awarded his DBA from the Harvard Business School in 1992.
