The Indian PC market grew 24 per cent over the third quarter figures of 2005 to exceed the 1.4 million shipment mark in a single quarter, according to IDC's India Quarterly PC Market Tracker which attributed the growth to the impact of Intel chip price cuts as well as the festive season promotions.
These market trends were further provided a boost due to a rise in the shipments of notebook PCs to the education segment which witnessed a 357 per cent YoY growth in terms of unit shipments. Shipments of commercial desktop PCs to the SMB segment grew 46 per cent YoY.
In the overall client PC (desktop and notebook PCs) market, the vendor rankings remained unchanged - Hewlett Packard retained the top slot with a market share of 21 per cent, followed by HCL at 12 per cent, and Lenovo at 9 per cent in terms of unit shipments.
However, HP's market share this quarter increased by 1 per cent while HCL's share dropped by 2 per cent and Lenovo's fell by 1 per cent in terms of unit shipments.
The notebook PC market too continued the growth momentum during the third quarter, states IDC. It registered a 79 per cent year-on-year growth thanks to buoyant buying by the education segment.
The notebook category witnessed an 18 per cent sequential growth and a 137 per cent YoY growth. In terms of total notebook PC shipments, HP retained the top slot with a market share of 41 per cent.
