Inflation up 3.55%

Inflation rose to 3.55 per cent for the week ended April 15, from 3.24 per cent in the previous week mainly due to costlier manufactured and non-food items.

Wholesale prices rose by 3.55 per cent besides manufactured and non-food items, aviation fuel also became costlier; but inflation was lower than 5.91 per cent in the same period a year ago, according to data released by the government.

Wholesale Price Index was up by 0.5 per cent to 198.5 points and it was 191.7 points a year ago.

Government revised the inflation figure downward to 4.13 per cent for the week ended February 18 from provisional 4.34 per cent and WPI stood corrected at 196.7 points from an earlier estimate of 197.1 points.

The Reserve Bank has estimated inflation to average 5 to 5.5 per cent in 2006-07, but has also acknowledged the threat to prices from high global crude oil prices hovering at about $70 a barrel now.
