The new scheme would be applicable for only those who have subscribed to MTNL's 'Plan 500,' meaning those customers who pay a rental of Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 1,500 and Rs 2,000.
"We are introducing a new scheme for those Plan holders whose monthly telephone rental is Rs 500 and above, under which for a new land line connections there will be no
security deposit charges of Rs 3,000, Rs 500 registration charges or any rental. Only call charges will be applicable," A K Arora, MTNL executive director, Delhi, said.
MTNL also has other plans like Plan 160 and Plan 250. Asked whether MTNL would cut tariffs for landline users to boost usage, Arora said, "We will consider all aspects about it.. but we will take all possible steps through improving network, providing additional value added services, giving such type new schemes to arrest the surrender of fixed line services".
MTNL, Delhi, currently has 16.39 lakh fixed line users. "Tariff is a critical element to boost usage and any reduction will be considered at the appropriate time. At present, I can't say," he said.
