Reflecting robust economic activity, India's oil product consumption rose by a massive 13 per cent in August to 8.81 million tonnes on back of increased demand for petrol and diesel.
Petroleum product demand grew 13.1 cent to 8.81 million tonnes in August as against 7.789 million tonnes oil products consumed a year ago, according to the latest data released by the petroleum ministry in New Delhi.
Petrol consumption was up 19.7 per cent ot 0.75 million tonnes while diesel demand rose 23.6 per cent to 3.16 million tonnes. Jet fuel (aviation turbine fuel) consumption also increased by 17 per cent to 0.256 million tonnes in August.
Naphtha demand fell 9 per cent to 0.89 million tonnes.
Public sector firms sold 7.52 million tonnes of petroleum products in August, a 10 per cent rise over last year while private sector firms saw a 35.2 per cent rise in sales at 1.29 million tonnes.
Oil product was marginally lower at 44.068 million tones in April-August this year when compared to 44.161 million tonnes consumption in the same period last fiscal.
Petrol consumption rose 6.4 per cent to 3.64 million tonnes while diesel demand was up 1.1 per cent to 16.5 million tonnes.
Naphtha sales was down 13.3 per cent to 4.44 million tonnes in the first five months of 2005-06 financial year.
While public sector oil firms recorded a negative sales growth rate of 2.6 per cent in sale of 37.92 million tonnes products in April-August, private sector firms showed a robust 17.8 per cent increase in sales at 6.13 million tonnes.
