Indian passenger cars sales up 15% in August

Bucking a trend of two consecutive months of drop in sales, passenger cars sales in the domestic market witnessed a 14.8 per cent jump in August 2005 at 72,165 units against 62,845 units in August last year.

Two-wheelers sales also surged by 17.91 per cent in August this year to 708,214 units as against 600,629 units in last year, according to figures released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers.

Commercial vehicle sales were also up by 18.17 per cent in August at 27,503 units as against 23,273 units in the same month last year.

The upward growth of car sales in August was led by Hyundai Motors India, which recorded 50 per cent jump in sales during the month, while market leaders Maruti Udyog also registered 12.39 per cent growth.
