Rahul Bajaj, chairman of Bajaj Auto Ltd., is among the five recipients of Harvard Business School's highest honour, the Alumni Achievement Award. The awards were presented Thursday in Boston at special ceremony before students, faculty, and other members of the HBS community.

Dean Jay O Light said,"'We are delighted to welcome these men and women back to campus, where their lives and careers inspire a new generation of students who aspire to follow in their footsteps. For almost four decades, these awards have recognized an extraordinary group of graduates who embody the most admirable ideals and highest standards of accomplishment and integrity."

Besides Bajaj, a 1964 MBA from HBS, the other recipients are Nancy M Barry, president, Women's World Banking; Louis V Gerstner, Jr, chairman, the Carlyle Group and former chairman and CEO of IBM Corporation; Judith R. Haberkorn, former president, consumer sales and services, Verizon Communications Inc and Joseph J O'Donnell, founder, chairman and CEO of Boston Culinary Group Inc.

HBS noted how Bajaj has been the driving force at Bajaj Auto Ltd for four decades and how under his direction, it became one of India's most foremost companies and the fourth-largest maker of motorised scooters, three-wheel vehicles, and motorcycles in the world.

HBS described Bajaj as an influential voice in Indian industry and a leader in introducing modern methods of production to his assembly lines and good governance to his country's corporations.

The mission of the Harvard Business School is to educate leaders who make a difference in the world. More than 65,000 HBS graduates strive to make these works a reality in a wide array of organizations that affect the lives of millions of people around the globe.

Since 1968, with the help of suggestions from alumni, students, faculty, and friends, the School has selected a number of outstanding men and women to receive its most important honor, the Alumni Achievement Award.
