Future students of Industrial Training Institutes can look forward to learning new trade skills that would arm them to the teeth in the job market, with the government currently working towards revamping these vocational institutes.
"Revamping of ITIs is high on agenda... It would be done through two-pronged approach firstly by changing syllabus and secondly making available large-scale investment through public private participation," Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia told PTI on Thursday.
"In India, ITIs train students in not more than 30 trades, whereas China and other countries have around 2,000 streams," he said.
"The current curriculum in such institutes offers trades that are old-fashioned like carpentry and tailoring. The students are not trained to handle large cranes and sophisticated construction machineries," he noted.
The government is working towards mobilising funds required through public-private core groups, he said, adding that the Centre was also considering to bring manpower in unorganised sectors to skilled labour category in order to make construction more qualitative and competitive.
The policy making body will give emphasis on infrastructure in the 11th plan period, whose blueprint is expected to be completed by the end of 2006, he said.
