The civil aviation ministry is planning to set up an International Convention Centre at Mumbai Airport to cater to the needs of business community for holding international exhibitions and conferences.

"We are planning to set up an International Convention Centre in Mumbai spanning over 20 acres with world class facilities for international exhibitions and conferences for business community," Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel said. The Airport Authority of India is examining the proposal and would soon take a decision on it, Patel said.

"We are also taking the views of the law ministry to comply with the land use plans," he said. Asked about the estimated cost for the convention centre, the Civil Aviation Minister said nothing has been finalised yet as the proposal is under consideration stage.

He said the Maharashtra government has identified a place within Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority complex to develop an international centre.

Patel said the aviation industry is going to witness $50 billion investment in next five to seven years.

"The investment proposals will exceed $50 billion in coming years as the country is only having 185 civilian aircraft for flying seven million Indians," he said.
