2.57 mn new phone subscribers in June

The number of new telephone connections in June grew by 2.57 million to take the total subscriber base to 10.5 crore (Rs 105 million) and teledensity to 9.70, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said on Monday.

"During the month of June approximately 2.57 million subscribers were added as compared to 2.33 million additions during May, 2005. In June, 2005 there were 1.98 million additions of mobile subscribers and around 0.59 million fixed lines," Trai said in a release.

At the end of June, 2005, total fixed lines were 47.70 million and mobiles reached 57.38 million taking the total of telephony subscribers in the country to around 105.08 million.

The teledensity reached 9.70 in June, 2005 as compared 9.46 at the end of May, 2005. During the first quarter of current financial year approximately 5.16 million mobile subscribers were added, making it a total of 57.38 million mobile subscribers at the end of June, 2005.

In the fixed segment, the subscriber base reached 47.70 million with addition of 1.79 million during the quarter. Broadband connections have also continued the steady growth rate since beginning of 2005.

At the end of June 2005 total broadband connections in the country stood at close to 400,000 from 63,000 in February.
