Buoyed by the demand for its Chevrolet brand, General Motors India on Tuesday said sales touched a record 3,207 units in September, the highest in a month since its inception and a growth of 60.2 per cent over 2,001 units sold in the same month last year.

The fully owned Indian subsidiary of the world's biggest carmaker said the growth was 68.5 per cent in the nine months ending September '04 at 18,517 units against 10,987 in the same period last year.

These included 7,344 units of luxury sedan Chevrolet Optra, 6,932 Opel Corsa and 4,072 units of the multi-utility vehicle Chevrolet Tavera.

The sales last month included 1,062 units of Optra, 1,370 of Tavera and 768 of Corsa.

"Enthused by the grand success in the Indian market, GM plans to bring some more new and exciting Chevrolet products specifically designed for the country. We will continue to make world class vehicles in India to give consumers the best vehicles in a wider range," GM India Vice-President (Corporate Affairs) P Balendran said in a statement.
