Tatas number 1 in market cap

The Tata group on Wednesday vaulted to the top business group in the country in terms of market capitalisation.

With Tata Consultancy Services clocking an individual capitalisation of Rs 47,232 crore (Rs 472.32 billion) at close on Wednesday, the total market capitalisation of the 26 listed Tata group companies stands at almost Rs 1,00,000 crore (Rs 1,000 billion).

The TCS listing has changed the market capitalisation sweepstakes, with the Reliance group -- the number one group so far -- now in the second position. The Reliance group had a market capitalisation of Rs 82,588 crore (Rs 825.88 billion) on the Bombay Stock Exchange at the close of Wednesday's trading.

TCS closed day one in the third place in individual company market capitalisation rankings, knocking Indian Oil Corporation from the third spot.

ONGC still tops the market capitalisation rankings, with a capitalisation of Rs 1,00,029 crore (Rs 1,000.29 billion) and private sector giant Reliance Industries ranks second with a market cap of Rs 63,933 crore (Rs 639.33 billion).

TCS alone added Rs 47,232 crore (Rs 472.32 billion) to the Tata group's market capitalisation on the day of its listing, while the other 25 listed companies acounted for a market capitalisation of Rs 52,800 crore (Rs 528 billion). So TCS added a good 89 per cent to the group's existing market capitalisation in a single day.

The third position in the market capitalisation rankings of business groups is now held by the AV Birla group, with a combined capitalisation of Rs 26,291 crore (Rs 262.91 billion).

Sunil Mittal's Bharti group ranked fourth with a capitalisation of Rs 25,403 crore (Rs 254.03 billion), while the Ranbaxy group ranks fifth with a market capitalisation of Rs 17,509 crore (Rs 175.09 billion).

Meanwhile, TCS has emerged as the largest IT company in market cap rankings. Till Tuesday, the honour was Infosys Technologies', which has now slipped to the second position with a market cap of Rs 41,477 crore (Rs 414.77 billion). Wipro is at number three with a market cap of Rs 40,346 crore (Rs 403.46 billion).

Within the IT industry, Satyam Computer ranks fourth at Rs 10,744 crore (Rs 107.44 billion) and HCL Technologies ranks fifth with a market cap of Rs 9,484 crore (Rs 94.84 billion).
