The Forbes magazine says that fictional characters earned more than $23 billion (that's almost half of the United Arab Emirates' GDP) in the year 2002!

To calculate the earnings of the world's top fictional characters, Forbes added together worldwide sales of toys/merchandise and videogames, publishing and box-office revenue, and DVD/VHS sales and rental revenue.

Forbes says the list does not include pure toys, which is why Barbie doll misses the bus. Had toys been included, Barbie would have ranked third having grossed $3.6 billion.
