Reliance Infocomm soft launches CDMA services

Hemangi Balse in Mumbai

Reliance Infocomm, the telecommunications arm of the Reliance group, soft launched its code-division multiple access (CDMA) services on October 28 at Thane, north of Mumbai.

Reliance's project, shrouded in secrecy, was finally cleared for soft launch by the Ambani brothers earlier this month.

"The optic fibre network was lit by the brothers on October 28 at the launch," a source close to the development said.

This launch will soon be followed by a national rollout for basic and Internet services in December. A string of various multimedia broadband services will follow.

To sell Reliance Infocomm's products and services, the company is also in the process of establishing a world-class retail chain with a national presence through Web stores.

These Web stores will offer broadband-based digital communication and entertainment services with three key parts: a broadband centre, a customer convenience centre and a foods and beverages area.

The company plans on setting up over 700 such Web stores across the country under a franchisee program.

At each Web store, Reliance will invest Rs 40 lakh (Rs 4 million) to Rs 1 crore (Rs 10 million) in branding and merchandise stocking, connectivity and other products and services.

Reliance Infocomm wants to be a full service communications player with an international gateway, a national broadband backbone, voice and data as well as value added services and last mile access.
