Mumbai phones to go 8-digit from Nov 10

In order to upgrade the services to meet the growth of its telecom network, the Department of Telecommunications had planned to introduce the eight-digit numbering scheme.

As part of the plan, it has allotted the '2' level to the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited in Mumbai.

Accordingly, MTNL Mumbai will prefix '2' to the seven digit subscriber telephone numbers, thus converting all its existing numbers to eight digits.

This change from 7 to 8 digit numbering scheme will be operative from '00' hrs of November 10, 2002.

However in case of Garuda WLL CDMA limited mobility service, the first two digits -- '25' -- will be changed to '205, while the last five will remain unchanged.

For instance, an existing MTNL landline number XYZ ABCD will change to 2XYZ ABCD. Similarly a Garuda number 25ABCDE will change to 205ABCDE.
