Infosys hires record 1806 techies in Q2

In a record of sorts, Infosys Technologies Ltd, the IT bellwether of India, has recruited a whopping 1,806 software engineers during the second quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal year (2002-03).

Claiming it to be the highest hiring in its history, Infosys CEO Nandan M Nilekani declared in Bangalore on Thursday that while the net addition of employees for the quarter under review was 1,806.

"As a result, the company's total strength of employees has shot up to 13,110.

The number of software professionals has increased to 11,892 from 9,994 quarter-on-quarter. Of these, 514 belong to the banking business unit.

In all, 3,330 employees are posted overseas for executing on-site projects and promoting the company's sales and marketing drive.

In terms of gender ratio also, the percentage of female employees has gone up to 18.2 from 16.9 per cent in the previous quarter. The company currently employs 2,065 female employees, with about 50 posted abroad. Their average age is 27.

"Our employee addition has been the highest, signalling the robust growth we are witnessing even in a challenging environment. Our new guidance also indicates the increasing business prospects for the remaining two quarters when we need more human resources to leverage our strengths," Dinesh said.

The utilisation rate, excluding trainees was 84.2 per cent during the quarter under review as against 80.2 per cent in the previous or first quarter of the current fiscal.
