Textile exports dip 10% between Apr-Feb

Textile exports have declined over 10 per cent to $9.81 billion between April-Feburary 2001-02.

According to information compiled by the textiles ministry on the basis of data sourced from Directorate General of

Commercial Intelligence and Statistics, textile exports were lower by 10.2 per cent from $10.9 billion in the corresponding period of the last fiscal.

Cotton textile exports and exports of readymade garments declined 10.5 per cent and 11.4 per cent, respectively, to $4.5 billion and $2.7 billion in the period under review.

Exports of traditional products, particularly handicrafts, posted the sharpest decline of 15.9 per cent at $979 million as against $1.16 billion in April-Feburary 2000-01.

The only segment to post an increase during this period was coir exports, which registered a whopping 38.4 per cent growth at $58.3 million when compared with $42.2 million in 2000-01.
