ABN AMRO wants to buy bank in India

Dutch bank ABN AMRO NV is holding takeover talks with several commercial banks in India, a Dutch newspaper said on Thursday.

"We actively investigate all options, but (the talks are) about a majority stake," Jan Peter Schmittmann, senior vice-president of ABN AMRO's consumer unit, was quoted as saying by Het Financieele Dagblad.

ABN AMRO was not immediately available for comment.

In April, Romesh Sobti, chief executive of ABN AMRO's Indian unit, also said the company was eyeing acquisitions in India.
