Tariff revision for postal services from June 1

Consumers would have to pay more now for postal facilities, with the government on Wednesday announcing that tariffs on letters, postcards and competition postcards would be increased by upto 100 per cent from June 1.

While tariffs on printed postcards and competition postcards would see a steep 100 per cent hike to Rs 6 and Rs 10 respectively, letters would now cost Rs 5 for weight upto 20 grams as compared to Rs 4 presently.

For every additional 20 grams or fractions thereof, the tariff would be Rs 5 as compared to Rs 4 now.

In case of letter cards the hike would be 50 paisa at Rs 2.50 as compared to Rs 2 earlier, according to an official release in New Delhi.

The rates for books, pattern and sample postcards has been raised to Rs 4 (Rs 3 earlier) for the first 50 grams or fraction thereof.

However, in the same category, every additional 50 grams or fraction thereof in excess of 50 grams would now attract Rs 3 against the earlier Rs 4.

Regarding book packets containing periodicals, government rolled back the proposed hike during the passage of Finance Bill and it would remain at Rs 2 for the first 100 grams and Rs 3 for every additional 100 grams.

  • For periodicals valued from Re 1 to Rs 20 the postal rates would be Rs 2 for first 100 grams and Rs 3 for every additional 100 grams.
  • For periodicals valued between Rs 21 and Rs 50 the postal rates would be Rs 4 for first 100 grams amnd Rs 5 for every additional 100 grams, the release said.

  • For periodicals valued over Rs 51, it would be Rs 8 for first 100 grams and Rs 9 for every additional 100 grams.

In case of parcels, the new rates stand at Rs 19 as compared to Rs 16 earlier for the first 500 grams, while for every additional 500 grams or fractions thereof, the new rate is Rs 16 from Rs 15 at present.
