Tarun Das in Coke's global body

Tarun Das, the director general of the Confederation of Indian Industry, has been appointed on the 12-member International Advisory Board of the Atlanta-based The Coca-Cola Company. Das will attend the inaugural meeting of the board to be held at Lausanne, Switzerland, on May 12 & 13.

The high-profile board includes eminent public figures from across the globe like Ernesto Zedillo, the former president of Mexico, Carla Hills, the former United States trade representative, Minoru "Ben" Makihara, the chairman of Mitsubishi, Daniel Glickman, the former US secretary of agriculture, and Cyril Ramaphosa, the former secretary general of South Africa's African National Congress. Makihara and Das are the only Asian members on the board which has five members from the US.

Das, 63, is also the non-executive Chairman of The Associated Cement Companies Ltd., India; non-executive chairman, Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd, India; non-executive Director on the Boards of John Keells Holdings Ltd., Sri Lanka; and GIVE Foundation, India.

He is also a member of Board of Trustees of The Aspen Institute, USA. As head of CII's permanent administration and secretariat, Das is responsible for interacting with Government in developing a positive environment for industry and assisting industry to strengthen its competitiveness.

He administers a staff of 500 spread over 39 offices in India and abroad.

Das has spent his entire working career in industry associations, starting with the predecessor body of CII in November 1963 and has been the chief executive of the permanent secretariat since April 1974 when CII (formerly AIEI) was formed.
