Ficci to collaborate with China on WTO issues

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Shanghai WTO Affairs Consultation Centre for collaboration in WTO-related matters. A Ficci delegation will visit Hong Kong and China during May 9-16, 2002.

The delegation, led by Ficci president R S Lodha, is likely to call upon Chinese Premier Zhu Rhongji.

"We feel there are several common areas where India and China can work together," Amit Mitra, secretary-general of Ficci, told Business Standard.

Mitra is looking forward to a bilateral agreement on intellectual property rights between India and China.

The visit of the Indian delegates will coincide with the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank in Shanghai.

Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha is likely to address an ADB session, titled "Asia 2015", on May 10 at the Shanghai International Convention Centre. Indian delegates will be also be present at other ADB sessions on the "Doha Development Round: Implications for Developing Asia" and "Corporate Governance in Asia".

Ficci has organised a corporate retreat called "Demystifying China" at Sozhou, about 84 km from Shanghai, on May 12. This will be attended by India's corporate leaders and their spouses.

The confirmed delegates include K K Modi, chairman of Modi Enterprises, G P Goenka of the Duncan Goenka group, Harshpati Singhania of JK Paper and Mukul Kasliwal of S Kumars.

Ficci is also co-hosting a seminar with the Guangming Daily in Beijing.

Ficci's office in China is fully operational. Atul Dalakoti, a Chinese-speaking Indian living in China for the last 20 years, has been appointed director.
