India Today group may launch another news channel

The India Today group, promoter of the Hindi news channel Aaj Tak, said in New Delhi on Friday that it is planning to launch an English news channel "eventually".

Aroon Purie, editor-in-chief of India Today said that he is also planning to launch a newspaper, possibly an afternoon edition, through his online division - India Today Group Online - soon.

"We will eventually launch an English news channel. The market is always right for launching another channel. We're working on the plans," Purie said.

He claimed that Aaj Tak broke even in July 2001, "and we have been generating profits ever since."

The promoters, including Purie, hold about 80 per cent stake in TV Today Network, the company through which the Hindi channel was launched.

Purie said that there were no plans to divest further stake.

Bharti Teletech, the manufacturing arm of the Bharti group and ICICI Ventures hold 10 per cent each.
