General Motors to do research with Indian Institute of Science

General Motors Corp, the world's largest automaker, said on Thursday it was committing $600,000 to conduct research with a leading Indian scientific institute to study auto materials and manufacturing processes.

GM said in a statement it had set up a collaborative laboratory with the Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore in Karnataka and committed to spend the money over the next three years.

"But it could grow as promising new areas are developed," it said.

GM, which makes the German-engineered Opel Astra, Corsa and Swing models in India, has already established similar laboratories in other fields at Jiatong University in Shanghai, China, and in four universities in the United States.

The research in India will focus mainly on lightweight materials such as aluminium and magnesium and the best methods for fabricating them, the auto giant said.

The laboratory will develop math-based tools to understand the limits of material performance during fabrication and in the product as influenced by the microstructure produced during manufacturing, it said.

"Forming alliances with top academic institutions allows the exchange of technical knowledge to help accelerate the pace of innovation," Alan Taub, executive director of science at the GM's R&D Centre in Warren, Michigan, said in the statement.
