Vijay Mahajan is new dean of ISB

The Indian School of Business has announced the appointment of Professor Vijay Mahajan from the University of Texas at Austin as its new Dean.

He takes over from the Dean's chair from Dr Pramath Sinha.

Announcing the appointment on Sunday, Rajat Gupa, chairman, ISB, said that "Vijay Mahajan has agreed to take up this very challenging role, now as we move to the next critical phase of the school's academic growth."

"As the new dean of ISB and an eminent academician, Prof Vijay Mahajan will drive a strong research agenda and attract high quality permanent faculty in addition to overseeing the day-to-day operational issues. In his new role, he will work towards taking this institution to even greater heights over the next few years," the ISB chairman pointed out.

Prof Mahajan holds the John P Harbin Centennial Chair in Business in the McCombs School of Business, the University of Texas at Austin. He is highly regarded in the field of marketing and has won several research and teaching awards in his career.

He also served as the associate dean of research, Graduate School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin during 1991-94. Prior to Joining UT Austin, he was a member of the permanent faculty at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

He received his B Tec at the Indian Institute of Technology at Kanpur and his MS in Chemical Engineering and PhD in management from the University of Texas at Austin.

Over the course of his career, Prof Mahajan has researched and written extensively on product diffusion, marketing strategy, marketing research and methodologies.

He has given presentations at more than 80 universities and research institutions worldwide. He has been a consultant for both government and industry and offered executive development programmes in the US, Asia, Europe and South America.

Prof Mahajan will be on lien from his university for the next three years. He has already started work on expanding ISB's permanent faculty pool and setting up the school's centers of excellence.

"The ISB's excellent performance in its first year is a testimony of its strong foundations-a world renowned governing board, excellent academic collaborations, access to high-quality faculty and a strong management team. It is an honour for me to take up the role of its new Dean, and work towards taking this institution to even greater heights over the next few years," Prof Mahajan said.
