Playwin to appoint 6,500 more retailers this fiscal

Suresh R Menon

Playwin Infravest Pvt Ltd, the Essel Group arm engaged in online lottery business, plans to appoint 6,500 more retailers in the current fiscal to sell Playwin Sikkim Super Lotto Jackpot tickets, according to Kulbir Ahuja, senior vice-president (sales and marketing).

Ahuja, who was in Kochi on Saturday to announce Kerala's first super jackpot winner of Rs 34.9 million, said his company has 3,500 retailers all over the country, through whom 75 million tickets have been sold so far and Rs 370 million have been given away as prize money to the winners.

Though the Playwin Super Lotto online lottery was launched in the country only three months back, it has already generated revenues of Rs 740 million during this short period. Lately, it has been clocking weekly revenue of over Rs 80 million, he added.

Ahuja said as a means to mop up revenue, even Maharashtra and Karnataka governments are planning to launch their own versions of online lottery. "Both these governments have mandated us to act as their marketing agents," he said.

Maintaining that the proposed online lotteries of these two states would have interesting variations as far as winner number combinations are concerned, he said while Maharashtra is likely to unveil its online lottery within a month, Karnataka might take three more months to materialise.

Elaborating on his company's plans, Ahuja said anyone who has a shop, business establishment or commercial space in a reasonably good location and is willing to deposit Rs 350,000 is eligible to become a Playwin retailer.

Revealing that the retailer would be paid 8.5 per cent interest annually on this deposit and it would be refunded if any dealer chooses to withdraw, Ahuja said.

Against this deposit, we provide the retailer a terminal and equipment worth Rs 500,000. While every retailer is expected to give a minimum sales of Rs 400,000 worth of tickets a month or Rs 100,000 every week, he gets 5 per cent commission on the total sales generated by him. Besides, he is also entitled to 1 per cent of the prize money, provided the winning ticket is sold from his store.
