Jumbo, Shaw Wallace top recruiters at ISB

Bhupesh Bhandari

Placements are nearly over at the Hyderabad-based Indian School of Business and guess who has emerged as the largest recruiter - the Jumbo group of the late Manohar Rajaram "Manu" Chhabria.

ISB office bearers disclosed that Dubai-based Jumbo Electronics (it has interests in the consumer electronics business in West Asia) and Shaw Wallace & Company are amongst the three companies which have made the maximum number of offers, the third being Godrej.

So far, 121 of the 128 students from ISB's first batch have taken up offers from various domestic as well as overseas companies.

Of these, 16 - nine by SWC and seven by Jumbo Electronics - have been taken by the Jumbo group. These graduates are slated to take up their new jobs on April 15 in India and Dubai.

Sources at SWC said the nine ISB graduates will fill various slots in the company, ranging from manager to general manager. The company has recruited some 50 management graduates through recruitment at business school campuses (30 per cent of these are from the IIMs) for various functions like human relations management, sales & marketing, finance and manufacturing.

These B-school graduates will be put through an extensive 12-month cross-functional training programme.

The ISB graduates who have taken the Jumbo Electronics offer will all focus on the electronics business.

The sources added that the intake of graduates from the premier B-schools by the Jumbo group is a part of a makeover exercise put in place by the group following a Mckinsey report a couple of year's ago to revamp the group's operations.

All told, 57 companies have made 187 offers at ISB so far. While 27 of these offers are for overseas positions, the remaining 160 are for domestic positions.

The average overseas salary is $82,000 per annum, while the average Indian salary is Rs 840,000 per annum. While the highest overseas offer is œ140,000, the highest Indian salary is Rs 2.8 million.

The list of global recruiters includes Bombardier, Capital One, Goldman Sachs, InfoUSA, Jumbo Electronics, Lehman Brothers and Novartis. In addition, Infosys, Satyam, NIIT, and Dr Reddy's Laboratories are among the domestic companies who have recruited for overseas positions.

Domestic recruiters include Citibank, Coca Cola, Feedback Ventures, GE, GE Capital, Gillette India, Godrej-Sara Lee, Glaxo-SmithKline, HDFC Ltd and Hindustan Lever, amongst others.
