Maharashtra govt moots legal action against Enron

The woes of beleagured and now bankrupt US energy giant Enron seem far from over with the Maharashtra government advocating legal action by the Centre against the multinational for illegally removing certain key components from its Dabhol Power plant in coastal Konkan.

"Enron illegally removed certain key components, including e-chips and CD-ROMs from its Dabhol Power plant and the Union Government should initiate legal action against the multinational," the state's Energy Minister Padamsinh Patil told reporters in Mumbai on Wednesday.

DPC officials have already admitted shifting of a few critical components from its 2,184 MW plant in Guhagar to a secured location in view of vandalism and pilferage at its 1,700 acre plant.

On queries about resolving the Enron imbroglio, the minister stopped short of blaming the Centre saying, "the Union Government's attitude is indifferent" towards the controversy, which, he said has "a bearing not only upon Maharashtra but the entire nation".

Various proposals were being discussed to resolve the impasse, he said like the state buying power at a revised rate from the phase I of the ambitious project while the National Thermal Power Corporation, the central power utility, purchasing the power from the phase II.
