Sinha to lead delegation for WEF meet in New York

Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha will lead the Indian delegation at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in New York to be held from January 31 to February 4.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Planning Commission member N K Singh will be part of the delegation at the 'Davos in New York' meeting.

The Confederation of Indian Industry will also send a 40-member CEOs' team for the meeting. CII president Sanjiv Goenka will lead the team which includes Ashok Soota, vice-president - CII and CEO - MindTree Consulting Ltd; Tarun Das, director general - CII; Ajay Khanna, deputy director general - CII.

The finance minister will address the plenary session and will speak on 'The Global Economic Outlook'. Thereafter, at an informal meeting of world economic leaders, the finance minister will discuss the priorities for development and emerging market finance with public figures led by Paul Martin, finance minister of Canada, and special participation of select G-20 finance, foreign trade and development ministers as well as central bank governors.

The workshop on 'Bridging the Digital Divide' will have Chandrababu Naidu discussing the role and priorities of business, governments, NGOs and international organisations in the use of technology to alleviate poverty.

Other important events pertaining to India would be CII's annual India reception that would be hosted on February 2 in New York. Supachai Panitchpakdi, director general designate, WTO; Fethi Merdassi, minister of international co-operation and foreign investment, Tunisia; Congressman Jim Kolbe; Richard Haass, director policy planning, US Department of State are likely to participate. More than 300 CEOs will attend the session.

The other important event will be a luncheon session jointly organised by CII and its partner The Asia Society in honour of the Indian finance minister and the Andhra Pradesh chief minister. This session would focus on 'Second Wave of Economic Reforms in India : Outlook 2002'.

Ltd; Lalita Gupte, joint managing director - ICICI Ltd; CP Jain, chairman - National Thermal Power Corporation; Baba Kalyani, chairman - Bharat Forge Ltd; Rajive Kaul, chairman - Nicco Corporation; Vijay Mallya, group chairman - UB Group; P K Mittal, managing director - Ispat Ltd; N R Narayana Murthy, chairman - Infosys Technologies; A M Naik, CEO - L&T Ltd; Rajendra Pawar, chairman - NIIT Ltd; Azim Premji, chairman - Wipro Limited; S Ramadorai, chairman - TCS Ltd; B Ramalinga Raju, chairman - Satyam Computer Services; Dhruv Sawhney, chairman - Triveni Engg; Gautam Thapar, vice-chairman - Ballarpur Industries Ltd; and Aroon Purie, CEO - The India Today Group.

More than 2,000 top business leaders, 200 political leaders, 200 foremost academic experts in every domain, including Nobel Prize winners and some 250 media leaders would come together to shape the global agenda at the WEF Annual Meeting in New York.

The first meeting of the 'India Business Council' will be another highlight in New York. This council has been formed by CII and WEF and will consist of CEOs from India and abroad and will provide a framework for consultation and engagement of activities related to India.

The Confederation of Indian Industry coordinates the 'India presence' at the annual meeting of WEF, which is held every year in Davos and at all the regional summits worldwide.

CII is also the co-partner to the WEF for the annual India Economic Summit that is held in New Delhi in November/December. The next Summit is scheduled from 24-26 November 2002.
