Tendulkar to unveil Palio S10 at expo

Partha Ghosh

Fiat Palio's Indian brand ambassador, cricket maestro Sachin Tendulkar, will unveil a signature version of the car, Palio S10, at the AutoExpo 2002 which begins in New Delhi next week. At his side will be two other beauties -- Michael Schumacher's own Formula 1 Ferrari and a top-end Alfa Romeo 166.

Giving company will be the Palio Sport, a sports version of Fiat India's small car, attired in a bright red hue.

Visitors to the show will get a glimpse of Sachin on January 15, the first day of the expo when he unveils the car and also addresses the media, a company spokesperson said.

The signature car is being called S10 (S for Sachin and 10 as part of his surname) and will be sold as a limited edition. "Only 500 units of the car will be available for sale. These cars will have Sachin's signature on their deck," the executive said.

S10 will be available only in the high-end 1.6 litre engine Palio. And the company has chosen canary yellow as the sole colour for the car.

It is likely to have additional interior features including a car stereo which is conspicuously missing in the four variants of the B-segment car launched by the company in September end last year.

Sachin's attachment to the car company has done wonders to the vehicle manufacturer's fortunes in India, with the Palio having already sold more than 8,000 units since its launch.

The Palio is part of Fiat's 718 world car project and is the most successful product in the Brazialian market. The three-box mid-sized sedan, Siena, built on the same platform failed to impress Indian consumers and the company is pinning all hopes on the Palio.

Fiat will also display a new version of the Siena and the station wagon Weekend at the show, the spokesperson added.
