Magisterial inquiry ordered into Harshad Mehta's death

In a significant development, the district administration on Tuesday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of 'Big Bull' Harshad Mehta in judicial custody.

Mehta, who complained of chest pain in Thane central prison, was shifted to nearby civil hospital where he died on Monday.

He was lodged in Thane jail for last one week after a special court remanded him and his brothers Aswin and Sudhir to judicial custody till January 4 in a case of alleged misappropriation of Rs 2.50 billion from 2.7 million missing shares of 90 blue chip companies.

Thane District Magistrate M S Chahal has ordered the inquiry to determine the causes leading to the death of Mehta. No timeframe has been fixed for the completion of the probe, official sources said.

The decision to order magisterial inquiry was announced by Thane Resident Deputy Collector M B Thackeray.

Thane Sub-divisional Magistrate Bharat Shitole will hold the probe and submit a report to the district administration.

He would call for evidences and relevant information from persons concerned, scrutinise medical reports and examine the role played by every person in the issue.

Police have registered a case of natural death.
