Govt to utilise RPF personnel for security in trains

Concerned over terrorist attacks, government is considering a proposal for amending relevant acts to utilise the services of Railway Protection Force personnel in providing security to passengers on running trains and stations.

Announcing this in his Budget speech for 2002-03, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar said the RPF Act and the Railway Act would be amended to help maintain better liaison and coordination with state police authorities.

This coordination was required since law and order and control of crime in railway premises was the responsibility of the state, he said.

Stating that the railway track was a 'visible symbol' of the government across the country, he said being a state owned asset it became a ready target for any terrorist, agitationist or extremist, desirous of making his presence felt.
