Computer-based ticketing system soon
The Railways will soon develop a computer-based Ticketing system under which passengers could buy unreserved tickets even from locations other than boarding station.
Announcing this while presenting the 2002-03 Railway Budget in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Railway Minister Nitish Kumar said the system will be able to issue monthly and quarterly season tickets as well.
A pilot project for this purpose is to be launched during 2002-03 in connection with 150th year of Railways.
Of the 13 million passengers who travel by Indian Railways, 12 million are unreserved passengers, he said.
Kumar said he has decided to provide computerised reservation system at all stations where the reservation related workload was over 100 transactions per day, besides at important stations and all district headquarters.
A total of 150 more terminals would be provided for this purpose taking the total number of PRS terminals in the country to 850 by the end of 2002-03.
