Court summons Verma, four others on Oct 8

A Delhi court on Thursday took cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation against the suspended chairman of Central Board of Excises and Customs B P Verma and four others in a year-old corruption case.

While taking cognisance of the CBI chargesheet against Verma, his son Siddharth Verma, Vijay Pratap (conduit between Verma and Chennai-based firm), Rajeev Sharma (employee of Siddharth) and C Shravan Kumar (managing director of the firm), Special Judge R K Gauba directed the accused to appear before him on October 8.

In its chargesheet filed on July 26, the probe agency had alleged that prime accused Verma had misused his official position and demanded a bribe of Rs 3.5 million for settling fake duty drawbacks for Chennai-based firm A K Enterprises.

All the five accused have been charged under section 120-B of Indian Penal Code (criminal conspiracy) and certain provisions of of Prevention of Corruption Act.

However, the CBI did not chargesheet Bhavna Pandey, another employee of Siddharth, who is also alleged to have acted as a conduit for the main accused, and has been left out though the agency officials maintained that investigations against her were in progress and if needed a supplementary chargesheet could be filed.

CBI claimed that Verma's son, Siddartha and Pratap, were caught in a five-star hotel along with a bribe amount of Rs two million.
