Sify, VSNL in largest bandwidth deal

BS ICE Bureau in Chennai

Satyam Infoway Ltd and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd on Tuesday announced the single largest contract for international bandwidth capacity placed in India.

With this, Sify will have over 300 mbps of international bandwidth for its customers and will be VSNL's largest private international bandwidth consumer in India.

The 155 mbps of bandwidth will be made available by VSNL through a half circuit STM1 international private leased circuit between Mumbai and the US.

George Zacharias, president and chief operating officer of Sify, said: "The contract will enable us to further our broadband initiatives to corporates, consumers and I-way cyber cafe chain. This is in line with Sify's plans for growth, new products and services."

"The 155 mbps of international bandwidth made available through this contract will allow us to offer fibre bandwidth with reduced latency, improved uptimes and additional service guarantees. It will impact our corporate and consumer businesses," added Rustom Irani, chief technology officer at Sify.

N Srinath, director of operations at VSNL, said: "This is our largest contract for bandwidth with any one customer. This order reaffirms the confidence of our customers in our ability to deliver quality service at attractive price points. We will continue with investments in this area and are confident of maintaining our lead in quality international bandwidth in the country."
