NCP backtracks over judicial probe into EnronIn a significant development, Nationalist Congress Party, a major partner of the ruling Democratic Front coalition in Maharashtra, on Thursday backtracked on the issue of judicial probe into the controversial power purchase agreement with US energy major Enron, and asked the government to reconsider its decision. "The decision to order a judicial probe in the Enron agreement is politically motivated and announced without taking us into consideration," state unit party spokesman Vasant Chavan told a press conference in Bombay. NCP ministers had communicated the party's formal position to the chief minister but he announced the judicial probe 'in a haste', Chavan said. NCP ministers would not be responsible for any adverse fallout following the government's decision to announce a judicial probe, he warned. "The government should reconsider its decision (of announcing a judicial probe into Enron matter) because our demand is only in the interest of the state," Chavan added. Earlier, NCP general secretary Praful Patel had stated that his party would support a judicial probe if DF allies take an unanimous decision in this regard. ALSO READ:
