Morepen Labs files for third international patent

Morepen Labs' has filed a patent on an improved process for the preparation of the amorphous form of atorvastatin calcium. This is Morepen Labs' third international patent under the International Patent Application under PCT, said a media release from teh company.

With this new improved non-infringing process for the preparation of amorphous atorvastatin calcium, Morepen is likely to gain entry into the $4-billion global market. Morepen will now be able to address the substantial export market and launch it under the brand name of Orvastin in the domestic market.

Atorvastatin ranks number one among prescribed drugs in the US and has the second-largest sales turnover in that country. It is the most widely prescribed cholesterol-lowering agent of the class of statins. Among the available statins such as lovastatin, simvastatin and pravastatin, this agent is described as most powerful in lowering blood cholestrol.

The drug is widely used to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apo-B, and trigylceride levels to cut down the risk of heart attacks, cerebral strokes and occlusive peripheral vascular disease. The high order of efficacy and safety has enabled Atorvastatin to acquire the highest rank among the prescribed products in the US where it is marketed under the brand name of Lipitor.

Atorvastatin enjoys 46 per cent of the sales turnover of statins in India and has a multibillion-dollar market the world over. The domestic market is of the magnitude of more than Rs 1 billion per annum and is growing at a tremendous rate of 71 per cent.
