Sinha sees economic turnaround by year-end

Union Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha said on Wednesday that he expected the country's economy to turn around before the end of this year.

"We will be able to tide over the problems. The economy will turn around before the end of this calendar year. The global economy is likely to improve by the end of this year," Sinha told reporters on the sidelines of a tax conference.

India's economy has been hit by a slowdown, expanding by just 5.2 per cent in 2000-01, sharply down from an earlier estimate of 6 per cent.

The country's industrial output growth in April slumped to 2.7 per cent from 6.5 per cent in the same month last year.
