India seeks UN nod to import more Iraqi oil

India has sought permission from the United Nations to import a further 1.5 million tonnes of crude from Iraq under the oil-for-food programme, Oil Minister RamNaik said on Monday.

He said India had earlier bought a similar quantity of crude from Iraq in exchange for wheat, rice and tea and was now looking to clinch a repeat order.

"We have asked for an extra 1.5 million tonnes (of crude) which is being considered," he told reporters at a news conference.

He declined to give details about the price of crude under the deal.
