Power minister directs special NTPC-PowerGrid teams to GujaratThe National Thermal Power Corporation has despatched special teams to Gujarat on the instructions from Union Power Minister Suresh Prabhu to restore the generation and sub-transmission systems in the state which have been affected by severe earthquake on Friday. The situation is being closely monitored by minister of power who has been in personal touch with all concerned organisations since Friday morning, a release from the minister's office said. Earlier in the day, a system disturbance occurred following the massive earthquake which led to a generation loss of 2600 MW in the Gujarat system. All but two 400 kv lines tripped due to the earthquake. The Western Region Load Despatch Centre took immediate action to restore the generation. While PowerGrid restored the generation within 13 minutes, the NTPC took two hours, preventing an eminent total grid collapse and tripping of Kakrapara and Tarapur atomic power stations, the release said. The sub-transmission and distribution systems of Gujarat Electricity Board have reportedly been unaffected by the calamity.
