Govt recommends anti-dumping duty on Chinese sports shoes

The government on Friday proposed imposition of provisional anti-dumping duties against imports of another consumer item namely - sports shoes from China.

The Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties, under the Commerce and Industry ministry, had yesterday recommended anti-dumping duties against imports of dry batteries from China.

The DAGD has recommended an anti-dumping duty of $6.277 per pair on all unbranded and low end branded shoes excluding Nike, Reebok and Adidas, while recommending a duty of $18.44 per pair on all branded category of imports from China.

Preliminary investigation was conducted for the period starting from April-September 2000.

The investigation has concluded that the domestic industry has suffered material injury by way of decline in its market share and financial losses due to depressed selling prices on account of price depression caused by the low landed prices of the dumped goods.

The DGAD has said imposition of anti-dumping measures would remove the unfair advantage gained by the dumping practices and prevent decline of the domestic industry.

The investigations revealed that the market share of the domestic industry declined from 74.09 per cent in 1999-2000 to 57.81 per cent in the period of investigation.
