India, Algeria sign bilateral partnership declaration

India and Algeria on Thursday signed a 'bilateral partnership declaration' covering a wide range of and three agreements aimed at further strengthening the cooperation between the two countries.

The declaration and the agreements were signed by External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh and Algerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Abdelaziz Belkaden in the presence of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the visiting Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

While the bilateral partnership declaration would cover a variety of issues including education, culture and scientific cooperation, the three agreements related to avoidance of double taxation, cooperation in the field of phyto-sanitary quarantine and vegetation protection and cooperation in the field of veterinary.

The two sides held official level talks on various issues. Besides Jaswant Singh, the Indian side was represented in the talks by Defence Minister George Fernandes, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Omar Abdullah, Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas E Ponnuswamy and National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.
