State-run telecom companies plan value-added services

Three state-run Indian telecom companies are looking at striking an alliance to offer value-added communication services that would include e-services, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Business Standard said the three companies involved were Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.

"The proposal mooted by the Department of Telecommunications is to explore the possibility of synergising the strengths of the three state-run firms to jointly roll out value-added services," the paper said, quoting unidentified ministry sources.

The proposal was discussed at a meeting late on Tuesday by the chief executives of the three telecom firms. The talks were chaired by Shyamal Ghosh, the most senior civil servant in telecom ministry, the paper said.

It said several more rounds of meetings have been lined up.
