Goa mulls setting up an SEZ at Vasco

Sandesh Prabhudesai in Panaji

Even as the proposal to make Goa a free port hangs fire, the state is toying with the idea of having special economic zone in Vasco.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in the state, which had opposed the free port earlier, has approved the proposal mooted by industries minister Shaikh Hassan.

"The final decision in this regard would be taken only after the feasibility report is studied and the Centre approves it," chief minister Manohar Parrikar informed.

He said that the proposal is on the lines of the SEZ being considered at Uran in Bombay. The feasibility study would also be carried out to fix up a location. Either the whole Mormugao taluka, including the port, or a part of it would be included in it.

Parrikar said that the state government would have control over law and order and similar aspects at the SEZ.

"Though entrants would not require a passport in the SEZ, import duties would be imposed for getting the goods out of the zone even in Goa," said Parrikar. Otherwise, no import or export duties would be imposed for the economic and industrial activities carried out in the SEZ.

He admits that the proposal would benefit the state only in terms of getting employment for the locals.
