Grasim in talks to buy Birla cement units

India's third-largest cement maker Grasim Industries is in talks to buy all the other cement units belonging to the Birla group, becoming the nation's largest cement company by capacity, a financial daily reported on Monday.

The newspaper, without citing sources, said Grasim may buy the cement units of the B K Birla, C K Birla and S K Birla groups.

The Birlas are one of India's largest business families with a total combined cement capacity of over 15 million tonnes, more than current leader Larsen & Toubro, whose capacity totals about 15 million tonnes.

Grasim Industries is the flagship of the Aditya Birla group, widely considered the most successful Birla family.

A Grasim Industries spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment.

Grasim stock rose 0.26 per cent to Rs 292.75 by Monday midday, while the Sensex was down 0.16 per cent.
