Centre to assist Maharashtra government over Enron dues

Union Power Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday, made it clear that the Centre would offer assistance to Maharashtra Government only if approached by the latter for solving the impasse between MSEB and US multinational Enron over payment of dues.

"Learning from the Enron experience, in our new power policy, we have planned to sanction international power projects (IPPs) in a state only after the concerned state government is willing to do so", Prabhu told reporters in Bombay at a function organised by Power Grid Corporation of India.

"If the promoters of IPPs are not acceptable to the financial institutions, then the government will under no circumstance, force the state to set up the project", the minister added.

"The agreement was signed between Dabhol Power Company and Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB). If both parties want help, then they can always approach us", Prabhu said, when asked about Enron's possible invoking the Centre's counter guarantee for the power project.
