Telco hikes Indica, Sumo prices

Indian auto and truck maker Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company Ltd (Telco) on Thursday said it had raised prices of various vehicles, following price hikes by other automakers active in the domestic market.

The price of Indica had been raised by 1.6 per cent to 2.75 per cent, and the price of the Sumo, a utility vehicle, by 1.6 per cent, a company official said.

The price increases range from Rs 5,500 to Rs 8,500 depending on the model, the official said.

Telco's price increase comes a day after India's largest car maker Maruti Udyog Ltd increased prices of its cars by between 0.29 per cent and 2.55 per cent, citing increasing costs and a depreciating rupee.

The Indian units of Hyundai, Daewoo and Ford have also recently increased their car prices.

The Indica competes in the Indian car market with the Maruti Zen, Hyundai's Santro, Daewoo's Matiz and the Uno from Fiat.

Telco is one of India's most diversified automobile makers, manufacturing heavy and light trucks, buses, cars and utility vehicles.
