Maruti strike ends; management to take back 40 employees

The over three-month old strike in Maruti Udyog Limited ended on Tuesday following an agreement between the union and the management late Monday night, but about half of the employees suspended/terminated during the course of the agitation would not be taken back on duty.

As per the agreement, the union signed an undertaking that it, along with all its members, would abide by the code of conduct specified in the certified standing orders of the company.

The agreement was signed in the presence of some senior officials of the ministry of heavy industry, official sources said, adding that negotiations were being held at the initiative of Heavy Industry Minister Manohar Joshi.

While Union leaders and MUL officials were not available for comments, sources said the management agreed to take back about 40 of the suspended/terminated employees on their signing a bond of good conduct.

"For the rest, law will take its course," the sources said, pointing out that the issue of the suspended and terminated employees was a major roadblock for reaching the settlement between the two sides.
