Government says it has no plans to privatise Prasar Bharati

The government said on Wednesday that it had no plans to fully privatise Prasar Bharati and that despite the onslaught of private TV channels, state-owned Doordarshan maintains its lead in audience share, with DD-1 and DD-2 together commanding over 40 per cent share.

Citing the survey by market research agency, Television Audience Measurement, across 27 cities in Februray this year, official sources said DD-1 was the most-watched channel across India with 28.3 per cent audience share followed by DD-2 at 12.1 per cent share.

Rupert Murdoch-controlled Star Plus, which expanded its audience share notably after the unprecedented success of Amitabh Bachchan anchored Kaun Banega Crorepati , was a distant third with 7.7 per cent audience share, sources said.

However, SONY Entertainment Television pipped Zee to the fourth slot with 4.5 per cent share of the Indian audience followed by Subhash Chandra promoted Zee at 3.2 per cent, they added.

They said for the week ending March 3 this year, Jai Mata Ki and Kundali were the top-ranking serials on DD-1 and DD-2 respectively as per DART, whereas the two were at fifth and fourth positions respectively as per TAM.
