PM's silence compelled release of RIL papers: BSP MP
Onkar Singh
Bahujan Samaj Party member of Parliament Rashid Alvi, who released over 800 pages of documents against the Reliance Group of Industries on Tuesday, told rediff.com that he had written to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, pointing out alleged irregularities committed by RIL.
"I waited for a considerable time for a reply, both from the prime minister and finance ministry," the MP from Amroha said. "I even sent reminders to the prime minister, but I got no response, hence I released the documents to the press."
Soon after addressing a press conference, the MP left Delhi to visit his constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
A member of Parliament's standing committee on finance, Alvi wrote to Vajpayee on December 20, 2000 drawing the prime minister's attention to alleged misuse of public funds by Reliance Petroleum Limited. He also alleged that the Industrial
Development Bank of India was in cahoots with RIL.
Alvi sent copies of his four page letter to the finance minister, law minister, and the Union finance, revenue and banking secretaries. Others who received copies of the MP's letter included RBI Governor Bimal Jalan; chairman and directors, IDBI; chairman and directors, ICICI; Securities and Exchange Board of India Chairman D R Mehta; Central Bureau of Investigation Director R V Raghavan; the chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes; secretary, department of company
affairs; and Chief Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal.
Responding to the MP's charges, an RIL spokesman told the news agencies, 'Reliance has provided complete information and explanation to all relevant authorities, and reiterates that Reliance has complied with all applicable laws.'
The spokesman described the allegations as a 'campaign of disinformation, falsehoods and untruths being conducted at
the behest of failed and unsuccessful corporate rivals.'
