We have to be more competitive: MaranIndustry Minister Murasoli Maran on Tuesday said the country has to be more competitive and produce better quality goods if it has to offset the effects of cheap foreign imports. ''We are not competitive'', Maran said in the Rajya Sabha during question hour, citing the example of cheaper but effective Chinese ''folding bycycle'' that is now coming into India. He said ''suo moto'' action has been taken against the Chinese goods that are not of good quality, for example batteries and shoes. Maran was replying to Samajwadi Party member Mohd. Azam Khan. Replying to Balwinder Bhunder of the Shiromani Akali Dal, Maran said the exim policy had recently announced several measures to protect agriculture. On subsidies to agriculture, he said ''we are levelling up and levelling down, we are fighting for lowering subsidies''. If some countries are restricting India's exports ''we will not hesitate to do the same'' to imports from these countries, he added. UNI |
